About a month after a new rookie priest had moved
into our town I received a telephone call from him inviting me around
for dinner. He wanted to some advice on setting up a blog.
The
guys idea was quite simple: he would give his homily on Sunday and
later that evening put it up on the blog and any of his flock who
wanted to ask a question, were confused about what he meant, or wanted
more detail could ask a question and he would clarify on the blog or
via email, and perhaps make some suggestions for spiritual reading.
We
were just about ready to eat dessert - cheesecake, one of my favourites
- when a knock came to the door it was two small children, a brother
and sister, wanting to see the 'New Priest.' Both children looked at
each other and the young boy blurted out 'Why did God let our kitten
die?' That was all. "Why did God let our kitten die?"
I whispered under my breath 'Blog That!'
The
priest thought for a moment, sat upright on his chair and looked the
children straight in the eyes and responds with an answer which was
pious, proper and correct in every detail. He used proper theological
language, spoke God's word and give a very orthodox answer, when he had
finished took a long sip from his tea.
As the children walk away I heard the young girl turn to her brother and say 'he doesn't know either!'
Maybe
it is time we listened more carefully to what our children are really
saying or what they are really asking. The blog incidentally lasted a
little over two months before it was withdrawn.
